Charleston Logistics Provider to Invest $36M in 400 KSF Expansion

Frontier Logistics, a provider of supply chain management services, plans to expand its existing footprint in Charleston County, following a $35.5 million investment. The company has purchased a 26-acre parcel at the former Navy base in North Charleston, S.C., where it intends to build a 400,000-square-foot facility.
According to county records, Frontier paid $6.4 million to buy the land from Palmetto Railways, a division of South Carolina Department of Commerce. The new facility is set to support the transloading of plastic pellets for export through the Port of Charleston. Palmetto Railways will provide rail service to the distribution center, connecting it to CSX and Norfolk Southern lines.
“Charleston has significant logistical advantages that reach the entire world market, enough so that it compels us to make Charleston a comprehensive launching pad for future export/import and domestic logistics needs,” said Frontier Logistics CEO George Cook, in a prepared statement.
NEW JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Frontier’s investment is expected to create 34 additional jobs, with hiring for the new positions beginning in the fourth quarter of 2018. The Charleston area has attracted lots of investors in the past few years. German car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz Vans is spending roughly $500 million to expand its North Charleston facility.
“Frontier plays an integral role in the handling of our plastics and resins business. The addition of their facility will support considerable increases in expected growth within the plastics segment over the coming years,” added South Carolina Ports Authority President & CEO Jim Newsome.
